“Those who can’t do, teach.”
That’s crap. Some people just LOVE to teach.
Music is a gift that needs to be shared, and one of my favorite ways to share that gift is to teach someone how to play it. That “light bulb” moment where something clicks for a student is absolutely beautiful. I love it.
I personally play music because it’s fun, and I enjoy it. That’s what I want my students to gain from my lessons. Of course learning the instrument is of the utmost importance, but I want the student to have fun while learning.
I like to think that my lessons are a little different than most teachers. I bring an upbeat, youthful energy to my lessons, as well as a unique vantage point having played and performed around the country in the popular music world. Most students want to play music they hear on the radio (pop/rock/country/r&b/hip-hop/blues), and I keep that in mind in my lesson plans.
My lessons are practical, logical, and applicable to playing music in the real world. We get into the “Whys” of the music, and not just the “Hows”. Why does music work the way it does? Why do these chords and scales go together? I want my students to understand what they’re doing, and not just know how to do it. Sometimes a student says “Why?” and honestly, maybe I don’t know. I’m a human being. I don’t know everything. Let’s Google it! Now we know.
Every student wants something a little different out of the lessons, and every student needs to be taught a little differently. I tailor all of my lessons to the student’s needs, and do whatever it takes on my part to make them successful. Teaching a 5 year old is a lesson in not just piano or guitar, but also patience and focusing. Teaching a 60 year old is sometimes showing them that you can “teach an old dog new tricks”. (I’m not personally calling you an “old dog” if you’re 60!)
Whether you’re brand new to the instrument, or just want to step it up a notch, I’d love to be there to help you out.
